We Have Fun!

The motto of the Dream Team is ‘We Have Fun’! Last week our group traded in their tennis shoes for bowling shoes in order to build friendships and reinforce the value of teamwork and exercise.

bowlingThe mission of the Dream Team is to use the power of a bicycle to help youth develop a positive approach to life’s challenges, but cycling is not the  core component of our organization. Cycling is an important method we use to engage the youth and set goals, but the Dream Team participates in many other activities that encourage healthy lifestyles. Dream Team meetings often consist of fun team building activities like bowling,  motivational and educational guest speakers  and participation in community service projects.

Sponsors and donors provide 100% of the funding for these activities and without them it would not be possible. The support of the community, friends and family enable the Dream Team to empower young adults to set goals, work hard, and DREAM BIG! Your tax deductible contribution is used to support the goals of the youth and the program. Visit our Donate page for more information about supporting our organization.

The Monday 4/29 training ride was to Altoona and during the ride everyone got together for a photo. Monday was probably some of the best weather of the year! The team is making great progress and everyone is very excited for more beautiful weather!

Special thank you to volunteer Kittie D. Weston-Knauer for the picture. Dream_Team_04-29-13_Edited

Dream Team Hosts Mayor’s Annual Ride For Trails

On Saturday, April 20th, Mayor Cownie and the Dream Team hosted the Mayor’s Annual Ride For Trails in Des Moines.  Several of our riders dressed for the occasion to meet and ride with the mayor.

Dream Team MayorsTemps at the start of the ride were in the upper 30’s, but that didn’t stop our kids from having a great time! This group was very excited to meet Mayor Cownie and each of these fine young people could definitely be mayor one day! The 25 mile route was no problem for the Dream Team, they have been meeting since March and already have many miles behind them.

Exciting News! The Dream Team has a new home!

We’re very excited to announce that the Dream Team will now be housed at the Riverfront YMCA for 2013!  With the Des Moines Register’s impending move to a new location, the Dream Team will now call the Riverfront YMCA “home”.  The Dream Team has been a program of the YMCA for years and this is just one more step in strengthening this valuable partnership.

Dream Team 2013 is in full swing!

We started our recruiting efforts in December 2012 for youth who wanted to work hard, dream big and strive for a goal that would change their lives. We have already accepted applications from 55 teenagers in the Des Moines area with another 15 on our waiting list to participate in Dream Team for 2013.

The team will begin meeting in March and will meet with the adult mentors 2-3 times per week through July. Every year the program culminates with a week long adventure where the mentors camp and ride side by side with the youth on a bicycle across the great state of Iowa in the annual event called RAGBRAI.  The relationships, memories and life lessons learned by these teens because of this adventure will definitely last them a lifetime.  The mission of the DT is to use the power of a bicycle to assist youth in developing a positive approach to life’s challenges and we have been changing lives, one pedal at a time since 1996, we encourage you to read more about Our History, Who We Are and What We Do.

Over 40 volunteers have committed for 2013 to change the lives of young people in DSM and several of the volunteers took the stage at the 2013 RAGBRAI Announcement Party in Des Moines, Iowa, on January 26th. The event sponsored by the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and RAGBRAI also helped raise money for the Dream Team. We thank them for their support!
